Arafat Is Dead

Topics: Middle East News and Perspectives

According to Haaretz in Israel today:
Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat died
on Thursday morning in the Percy hospital in Paris, Palestinian Authority official Saeb Erekat announced early Thursday.

"His body will be moved to Cairo where his funeral will take place Friday, Erekat said, adding that the Palestinian leader died at around 3:30 A.M. local time. Estripeau then told reporters that the body of the 75-year-old leader would be leaving the hospital, but that - because of French privacy laws - no details would be given on the cause of death or anything else.

Arafat's top aide Nabil Abu Rudeinah told reporters Wednesday night that Arafat was expected to die within hours. "Many organs have stopped working, except for Arafat's heart - it is still beating," Abu Rudeinah said. "Should the Palestinian leader die in the coming hours, as his doctors are expecting, there will be an official funeral in Cairo on Friday with the participation of kings, princes and heads of Arab and Islamic states," Abu Rudeinah added."

Arafat has been rumored to have already been clinically dead for some time, staying alive only by artificial means. Rumors of his having AIDS have persisted but have not been confirmed. More on this coming in Hyscience later today.
